New Initiative: Pathway to Home-Based Nursing Certification

The Education Committee is pleased to share an exciting new IHCNO initiative: the development of a Pathway to Certification in Home-Based Nursing. While no formal certification currently exists in this specialty, the need is clear—home-based nursing requires a unique skill set that deserves recognition and support.

In response to international interest, a subcommittee has been formed to explore alternate credentialing opportunities, including full certification, digital badges, and micro credentials. These short skill-based programs will serve as a stepping stone toward a long-term goal: establishing a formal home-based nursing specialty certification.

Digital badges, based on specific web-based successful training, offer flexible, verifiable recognition of nursing skills and are easily shared on platforms like LinkedIn and digital resumes. They are increasingly valued by educators and employers helping nurses showcase their expertise in a validated way.

This collaborative effort is informed by interest in home-based nursing related standards, competencies, curricula, and models.

Your voice matters. In the coming months, we’ll invite member input to guide development. Together, we’re paving the way for future home-based nursing leaders.
